Mee-rror

I’m starting with the man in the mirror,

I’m asking him to change his ways

And no message could have been any clearer

If you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make that change.

(Michael Jackson – Man in the mirror)

There are many mirrors around us. For the sake of this article, let’s define a mirror as a ‘reflective surface’. Walk with me..

1st mirror – your environment…both people and things. If you want to know someone better, look at what and who they surround themselves with. Need I say more? Even though you may not be a gossiper, if your friends are gossipers, you are also a gossiper by extension. Even if you wear the cleanest clothes and have daily showers, if your environment isn’t clean, by extension, you aren’t clean.

2nd mirror – your output. What you put out in the world is a reflection of what you put in. For this, language is the most obvious indicator. It doesn’t matter the language you use, however, it does matter the content of that language. Do you use it to build or destroy?

3rd mirror – the actual mirror that we know of…that thing that can either be a friend or foe…that thing that can glorify your beauty or magnify your flaws…that thing that we rely so heavily on each morning so that we show the proper ‘face’ to the world. But at the end of the day, what do you see when you look at yourself? Do you see the person you were meant to be? Do you see someone striving to be better today than yesterday? Do you see a person tormented?

MJs lyrics are relevant to all and sundry. When you go through life consciously aware of the mirrors, you’ll be able to see your true reflection…and better yet, be a reflection for someone.

You can’t if you close up your mind! (anonymous)

  1. Nj, your words made me think of another person described in the Holy Book (still regarding a mirror) in James 1:22 Where we are challenged not to just be hearers but doers of the word as well.
Thanks for the challenge for us to “reflect” back on what we mirror…or what mirrors us.
