I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am not your expectations, no (hey)
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am the soul that lives within
India Arie
This song has a catchy tune that has stuck in my head for years! Now, I’m not sure what Ms. Arie was thinking while she was writing the song, but I thank God that she wrote it because it resonates with what goes on around us.
We human beings have the default character of ‘judging someone based on how they look’. How many times have we laughingly told someone ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’…’don’t judge me based on my outward appearance’…’You’re not as scary as you look’…?
This week I’ll keep it short so let me hop onto the poetry train..!
When you see me quiet, don’t think I’m a snob. Ask me the reason..
When you see me dressed contrary to your expectations, don’t label me a rebel or vagabond. Ask me the reason..
When you see me frowning, don’t assume you are the cause. Ask me the reason..
When you see me disturbed by the line of conversation, don’t assume I’m antisocial. Ask me the reason..
When you see me sleepier than usual, don’t assume I’m lazy. Ask me the reason..
Ask me the reason..
“I am the soul that lives within” – India Arie
Don’t ask me the reason, just know there’s a reason…..
Thank you for the challenge… true, that default setting can make us miss out on a lot.
Ask me the reason, and I might also choose not to give my reason. This life has no balance 🤣🤣🤣
